EU-Presidency and the Youth Council
From January 1st to June 30th, 2006, Austria held the Presidency of the European Union. What does it mean to be chair of the EU? Why and how was the Presidency important for the National Youth Council?
In the first half of 2006 not only numerous important meetings of top-level European and international politicians took place in Austria, holding the EU-Presidency also means that meetings of the Council and the Council’s working groups are chaired by Austrians. The Presidency also means representing the EU in its relations with countries outside the Union.
In short: During this time Austria had a special responsibility for the joint proceedings, processes and projects of the EU and its member states.
Important decisions and plans had to be made regarding youth, particularly when it comes to developing a common and consistent European Youth Policy.
The Austrian National Youth Council and the European Youth Forum were and are therefore asked to stay in close and permanent contact with decision-makers in the EU and represent and work in the interests of European youth!
